Subject: Praying over Hebrews 5:1-9

Hi all

Been praying, studying the passage in Hebrews 5:1-9, with some hyperlinks.

I had particularly been mulling over the word for “piety” or “fear” in verse 7, “took hold of it well, or got it good”, is a close translation, and a little easier to relate to, I think :-)

5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed to be over men in things for God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices over sins:

5:2 Who has the power (dunamis) to have the measure of compassion on both those who do not know, and those who have wandered away, since he himself is encompassed with feebleness.

5:3 And because of that, therefore, he should bring forward the offering over sins both around the people and also around himself.

5:4 And no one takes this honour for himself, but the one called under God, exactly as Aaron.

5:5 So Christ did not magnify himself to become the high priest, but it was the one who said to him “You are my son, this day have I engendered you.”

5:6 As he says also elsewhere, “You are a priest forever, after the arrangement of Melchizedek.”

5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had brought forward his offering of prayers (binding himself to his requests) and supplications (amply working at his approach) with boisterous crying (clamour), and tears, towards the one with the power to save him from death, and was listened to since he “got it good” i.e. took hold of it well; (sometimes translated as piety, devotion, reverence or fear). “Got it good” nails it, I think :-)

5:8 Although he were a son, yet he learned attentive listening (obedience) through being away in suffering.

5:9 And being completed (made perfect), he became the cause (the author) of eternal salvation to all who attentively hear (obey) him.

Blessings all :-) Steve
